Dr Selim (Queen’s University Belfast) and Dr Sibley (University of Sheffield) have been awarded a research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to lead the multidisciplinary collaborative project “Belle Epoque” Cairo Museums Itinerary (BECAMI).
The project aims to re-establish a balance in the current dominant discourse on cultural heritage and collective memory of the “Belle Époque” era, during which Cairo was a home to Novel Architecture and urban embodiment of the Parisian Dream over the Nile.
We will engage with various communities in the re-discovery and emotional appropriation of eleven Cairo museums, all housed in buildings of high architectural and historical significance.
We also propose a new type of engagement with the tangible and intangible heritage of the liberal age, with its flourishing art, music, technological innovations, political issues and modern way of life and consumption.
